How Commit works

Achieve your goals or
lose money

Attach a real-money penalty to any goal. Submit proof before the deadline. Your AI coach reviews it against your own rules. Miss it and you're charged; hit it and you keep your stake.

The Commit app's Goals screen: four goals (Bed by 11pm, Gym, No doomscrolling and Study for finals), each with its penalty, its cadence and this week's progress.

How it works

1

Set a goal and a stake.

Choose a goal to commit to, what counts as proof, a penalty for each miss, and where that money goes.

It reviews your evidence against your own rules and leniency setting. Achieve your goal and you owe nothing. Miss it and you lose money.

Miss, and the money moves.

Nothing is charged by surprise. Every miss opens a 4-day window to appeal, or to have the coach approve it. When that window closes, the penalty actually leaves your account.

Does it work?

With money at stake, you’re 4.5× more likely to succeed

In a randomised trial, people who staked their own money on a weight-loss goal hit their 16 lb target 47.4% of the time. The group with nothing at stake hit it 10.5% of the time.

And it isn’t one study. Across 35 randomised trials, deposit contracts beat every other incentive tested — cash rewards, lotteries, all of it — and they were the only kind still working months after the programme ended.

The AI coach

You set the rules.
Commit holds you accountable.

Tell your AI coach what you want to commit to, and it reviews the evidence you submit against your own criteria. You choose exactly how lenient it is.

Reviews every submission

Checks your evidence against the goal's exact criteria the moment you submit it.

You set the leniency

Lenient, moderate, or strict. You set it per goal, so the coach grades the way you actually want to be held.

Can approve or refund

It can approve a period, refund a charge, or escalate a dispute to a person. It isn't the last word.

Works while you're away

On Premium, your coach watches in the background and reaches out only when something genuinely matters.

Then Friday is the one worth staking. Want me to raise Friday to $40 and leave the rest at $25?

What counts as proof

Ten ways to stay honest, each hard to fake.

Photo

Live or from your library.

Camera-only

Must be shot live in-app, not from your library.

Video

A short clip of the goal in progress.

Live screen recording

Record your screen with a one-time code on display, so it can't be an old clip.

Scan a code

Register a barcode or QR, then rescan the exact one. Useful for meds or groceries.

GPS check-in

Confirms you were at a specific place.

Time-lapse

The in-app camera captures stills over a session, proving sustained work.

Apple Health

Reads real steps, workouts, sleep, and mindful minutes. Typed-in numbers don't count.

Written note

For goals that are easiest to just describe.

App Blocking

Lock distracting apps behind a daily limit. Commit enforces it right on your phone.

Where a miss goes

Send money to friends or earn it back.

On Premium, route it your way instead of losing it to us: send it to a friend and real money lands in their account, or send it to your Vault and earn it back by rebuilding your streak.

Send it to a friend

When you miss, real money lands in their account, so slipping actually costs you.

Fair by design

Real charges, with a real appeal.

Penalties are real charges handled by Stripe. Commit never sees your card number, and you're never charged by surprise: every miss opens a 4-day window to appeal or have the coach approve it before anything actually leaves your account. If a charge is still wrong, you can escalate it. Our team reviews disputes personally, not a script.

Why it works

Commit makes any goal easier

Most people assume a penalty adds pressure. It removes it.

The real cost of an un-backed goal isn’t the miss — it’s the negotiation. Every morning you re-litigate whether today counts, whether you’re tired enough, whether skipping once matters.

A penalty ends the argument. You start living by what you actually want instead of what feels good right now — free of your short-term desires because you’re bound to your long-term ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Unlimited goals, unlimited coach messages, every evidence type, App Blocking, alarms, private evidence, and friends. Premium adds the smarter coach model, the Vault, penalties routed to a friend, and coach-scheduled reminders. Penalties are separate: that is money you choose to put on your own goals.

Commit doesn’t control you. It gives you the power to fully control yourself. Every day, you have to choose between your short-term and long-term desires. With Commit, you can live according to your long term goals without needing any motivation. You decide now, while you actually want it, and the future you at 6am inherits a decision instead of an option. You set the penalty once and can start living the way you’ve always wanted to.

Up to $100 per miss, in whole dollars. You set the amount when you create the goal.

Through Stripe, and never by surprise: every miss opens a 4-day window to appeal or have the coach approve it before anything actually leaves your account. Commit never sees or stores your card number.

You are never charged by surprise. Every miss gives you 4 days to appeal, or to have the coach approve it first. If a charge still looks wrong, you can escalate it. Our team reviews disputes personally, not a script.

The AI coach grades your evidence against the criteria you wrote yourself, at the leniency you picked: lenient, moderate or strict, set per goal.

Pick distracting apps and a daily limit, and Commit enforces it right on your phone. Break the block and you're charged, or pay a small fee each time you unlock.

You choose: to Commit by default, to a friend, or into your Vault to earn back through streaks. Routing to a friend or the Vault is a Premium feature and costs 5% on top of the stake; sending it to Commit has no fee.

On Premium, route your penalty to a friend instead of the house. When you miss, real money lands in their account. They just link a bank to receive it. Your friend receives the full stake; the 5% routing fee is charged to you.

Yes. They need an account, and they link a bank to receive payouts. Your friend receives the full stake; the 5% routing fee is charged to you, not to them.

No. Only the person who set the goal needs Premium to send their penalty to a friend. Receiving costs nothing.

A Premium feature: instead of losing a missed stake, it's locked away. Rebuild your streak and earn it back. Paybacks return your full stake, whether the penalty was charged to a card or a bank.

Sending a penalty to the Vault or to a friend costs 5% on top of the stake, charged to whoever missed the goal. A $20 penalty routed to a friend charges you $21 and your friend receives the whole $20. Penalties that go to Commit, the default, have no fee.

No one at Commit ever reads your evidence or goals unless you ask them to. The AI coach grades your evidence and deletes it after 90 days, and there’s an optional privacy mode that deletes your evidence as soon as it’s graded.

Commit only reads the activity a goal needs to be graded, and only real sensor data from your watch and phone. Manually-entered numbers are ignored.

No. Friends see whether a shared goal is on track or missed. They never see the photos, videos or recordings you submit.
